Silent Hill f isn’t super subtle about what each of its individual parts mean. The basic enemy is a slender female mannequin. One of the enemies has multiple faces and can either spit a toxic liquid from its mouth, or scream so loud it paralyzes Hinako. One of the enemies is swollen, covered in pustules, and gives birth to other enemies (Hinako mentions in her journal ‘The wonders of birth do not apply to this’). One enemy appears to slick back its nonexistent hair before grabbing Hinako and forcing a kiss on her. As horror speedrunner Punchy says in his playthrough “This whole thing smacks of gender.” But because there appear to be multiple layers of narrative all sitting upon each other, I’ve seen a lot of people expressing confusion about what it all means. Is the game about the Japanese patriarchy? Is it about how much marriage sucks? Is it about the perils of addiction? Yes. It’s probably about all of those things.
