A Study of Cinematic Sounds (sound collage, 2026)

Hello there. This is another sound collage that I made by chopping up audio from 15 different films in the public domain. I cut a minute of audio from each film and stitched them together. Normally when I combine different audio files together, It automatically crossfade between each section to create a seamless experience. This time around I wanted to to something a bit different. Instead of seamless transitions, it’s more jarring and abrupt, creating a sense of instability. After creating an initial 15-minute “audio chain”, I repeated the process six more times, changing around the order of each movie and using different scenes so as to avoid a predictable structure. Finally, I layered together all seven audio chains in my DAW, adding different effects to each track. If you notice, there’s two versions in this post. The main difference between the two is that the second version (at the top) features additional effects like backmasking and 3D audio and the volume for each track varies, whereas the first version (above current paragraph) has equal volume across all tracks. Here’s a list of all of the films I used, in no particular order: The Big Combo (1955) https://youtu.be/SmU09txqgjU?si=s0W0ZfVq0KadcV7W The PYX (1973) https://youtu.be/mcO8VKVq7yI?si=XcgswGr1N5_DxKDv Silent Night Bloody Night (1972) https://youtu.be/2fQ-YXaHc1Q?si=kLekde6tu4Y4ihX1 Night of the Living Dead (1968) https://youtu.be/AubveJ-r5Do?si=YLksiwvS_CaBOfyA Charade (1963) Scarlet Street (1945) https://youtu.be/pE0w6tIHPew?si=Cl-FCUn7Kks7Pc8F Sita Sings The Blues (2008) https://youtu.be/by_W6nUrPCQ?si=5AxLpCVfXxrt6C_P Detour (1945) https://youtu.be/noJYx8sWejI?si=k1e2ZHRXqbzDOL-g Carnival of Souls (1962) https://youtu.be/L_9JCG9tI-Q?si=PqZ5SV8o9hZX0MJi Horror Express (1972) https://youtu.be/gdKIVI36ihc?si=hx3MWwuMf5pHkULI The Last Man On Earth (1964) https://youtu.be/HZz01CN8lFg?si=5wcVa6nkg9mnmpU0 The Driller Killer (1979) D.O.A. (1950) https://youtu.be/SXDGYHbO2vc?si=gjfyGKB9ibLd46LW The Man With The Golden Arm (1955) https://youtu.be/wOKEOWTQhxI?si=-kzS2147s2Mq2Lxy The Stranger (1946) https://youtu.be/9T9XaBMZRy0?si=aID7LObYz7UhBGWN The funny thing is that this whole project was inspired by seeing the Backrooms movie this past weekend with a horror movie club I’m in. Though I am young, I wasn’t too familiar with the Backrooms concept, mainly because I don’t use 4chan. I became aware because YouTuber Blameitonjorge mentioned it in a few videos about Internet lost media. Specifically, people were looking for the original image, which was later revealed to have been taken sometime in 2002 inside the former site of an Oshkosh, Wisconsin furniture store while the then-new tenant was renovating. That image may have inspired the cover image here, which is an edited screenshot of footage I shot at the theater for an upcoming video. I was honestly shocked at how good it turned, given that movies based on Internet memes and content tend to suck (see 2018’s Slender Man). I guess it shouldn’t be too surprising given that the guy behind the Backrooms short films wrote and directed the films and that A24, which has released some of my favorite films in the last few years, distributed the film. It does fill me with a bit of pride that two of the most successful films this year (this film and another one called Obsession) were done by fellow YouTubers. They even managed to beat The Mandalorian and Grogu at the box office! Anyways, I’m gonna try to write more here. I’ve been going through some life stuff so my output has been limited in the last few months, but hopefully I’ll be able to turn it around as I got a lot of ideas that I need to get out of my head.
